Chimney Rock Park
Chimney Rock State Park is one of the most noticeable attractions in the Hickory Nut Gorge. The gigantic park is comprised of 4,531 acres and features hiking trails, the Devil's Head balancing rock, and the 315 monolith rock formation. Hickory Nut Falls, the 404 foot waterfall is also found in the park. The rock itself is accessible by elevator and provides stunning views of the surrounding area and Lake Lure North Carolina. The park was featured in the 1984 film, A Breed Apart, and the infamous last scenes of the 1992 film, The Last of the Mohicans. On a clear day, you can see some 75 miles of countryside below.
The park is home to numerous wildlife habitats including rare mountain wildflowers, endangered bats, salamanders, rare and unique cave dwelling invertebrates, and beautiful birds such as the peregrine falcon. Bird watching, and rock climbing are popular activities enjoyed at the park in addition to the hiking and walking trails.
